What is Daylighting?
Daylighting: What is it and how can you get it?
Recently I stopped by The Natural Lighting Company to ask about remedying the low light in one of my duplex units. They suggested daylighting using Solatubes to bring in light to darker areas. Daylighting is brightening your home without the use of electricity; in the Southwest, sunlight provides an unlimited no-cost daytime light supply. Solatubes capture daylight and deliver it to interior spaces, using the worlds most reflective material, bringing 99% of the daylight inside, summer and winter. And when the sun isnt shining, the LED light inside provides bright nighttime light. LEDs use minimal electricity and last up to 20 years.

For my purposes, I priced out the 14 Solatube system, with a warm effect lens and Optiview fixture. The total cost was $715 before tax, which includes a plaster ceiling cut for the installation. The entire installation cost qualifies for a 30% Federal Tax Credit, which brings the cost down to only $500! See below for example of Solatube.
