Las Vegas, New Mexico, is a gem of a town, tucked discreetly in the eastern edge of the Sangre de Cristo mountains, in northern New Mexico. When word of the revival of one of two Fred Harvey Houses in the city (the Plaza is the 2nd) go out, that area, called Old Town, began getting some much needed attention. San Miguel County Assistant District Attorney Tom Clayton is now restoring the nearby Rawlings Building, which once served as a dorm for the Harvey Girls who worked at La Castaeda in its heyday.

For the Places with a Past Rejuvenation of Las Vegas Historic Homes & Buildings Tour, I was lucky to go into the Rawlins Building to the 2nd floor, which was open from above to the first floor, & not yet safe for anyone but contractors. Built in 1899, the building is based on Italianate designs, made of stone & brick masonry & has ornamental components that were crafted of pressed metal. Pretty amazing faade...
