Architectural Spotlight
There are numerous Queen Anne-style Victorian properties in the MetroABQ area, most if not all built toward the end of the 19th Century. They can generally be found in the MetroABQ’s first suburb — the Huning Highlands. If you look around, though, you might find some of these exquisite buildings tucked discretely in other places. Welcome to the Mauger Mansion, Downtown’s Greatest Victorian!
This exquisite 1897 Queen Anne Revival three-story Victorian Mansion is on the edge of the 4th Ward Historic District, Downtown in the MetroABQ. Currently the Mauger Mansion is a busy eight-room Bed & Breakfast, with access to two rental apartments. Period architecture includes wraparound Porch, Balcony & Gables plus much more. Unique rooms include private baths, period antiques, a Dog Room with private courtyard, Suiteroom & room with south-facing Balcony, for great passive solar winter heat gain.
Beautifully remodeled, the Mauger Mansion has been listed on the national register of Historic Places since 1985. The building has two comfortable Breakfast Rooms, a full Kitchen and a cozy Parlor. It’s a fantastic Bed & Breakfast, or it could be an Inn or residence.
Notice the intricate brick detail that makes up the different relief levels of the original fireplace. Brick, used both for building and for interior designs, is a prominent Queen Anne Revival material. Seen in the large front guest room along with the fireplace, the unique oval window pivots outward from a fulcrum in the middle, and was made from leaded glass, another Queen Anne period detail. The detailed and decorative relief work on the Bannister is typical of Queen Anne interior design, along with the prominent molding throughout the mansion.
